Writer Highlight Featuring Damon Johnson

This the house my grandfather built
I remember it like it was yesterday
Wrapped up tight in my grandmother’s quilt
On the front porch watching time just drift away

Grandmother got fresh biscuits from the oven
Apple butter and preserves made from scratch
Marvin Gaye sanging how he needs some lovin
As she fries up Grandfather’s early morning catch

This old house done seen quite a few things
Just one strong wind from falling
Yet seems like the beginning of every Spring
I could swear I hear my Grandparents calling

  1. Loved it! I am from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and so many of my friends live in farm houses in the country such as this one. This poem reminded me of all my friends and families who make biscuits and apple butter and all sorts of jams all from the scratch.
