Writing Tip: Music as Inspiration

When you sit down to write and the ADD kicks in or a million distractions prevent you from finishing one sentence, it means time to find a new angle. If you don’t have the luxury of finding that solitude in nature where the noise of civilization is miles away, then may I suggest the next best thing – MUSIC. I find my creativity flowing more when I listen to music. For me, classical movie scores do the trick and I pick and choose which I want to listen to depending on the topic I am writing.

My playlist includes many Science Fiction/Fantasy movie scores as they are my favorite kind to watch.

When I feel nostalgic and want to write about my past or the happenings of the world, I like the soundtracks of apocalyptic movies like “Oblivion,” “Divergent” and “The Time Machine.” The music can take me to the past and future often inspiring poems of the way I want to change myself or the world. When I feel like writing something quirky or adventurous, I play “Pirates of the Caribbean,” “Alice in Wonderland” or “Prince of Persia” soundtracks. When I want nature to inspire me “Avatar” is my soundtrack of choice. And for those times when I feel like I am on top of the world “Man of Steel” or the “X-Men: First Class” scores liven me up to write with positivity.

The same way these movies and books in the same genre take me away far from reality, the music becomes my escape. Headphones are a wonderful tool – use them! You will be able to block out those annoying patrons whispering at the library or maybe your husband sitting on the couch blasting the television when he plays video games. Music has helped me focus and even inspire my writing as I play out certain fantasies in my head. I don’t know how I would write without it.
