Introducing Author Nolan P. Holloway Jr.

In 2010 Nolan P. Holloway Jr. started spontaneously writing poetry. His creativity in writing continued flowing and before he knew it his first book was born. “Into My Rotation, A Collection of Scribes” was published in 2012. Nolan’s love for poetry continued to grow over the years to follow, and through the growth emerged his next book “Journey To The Poetic Light: Illuminations” published by Creative Talents Unleashed. It is with great pleasure that we introduce Author Nolan P. Holloway Jr. to you.

Hi Nolan, thank you for agreeing to this interview. Let’s get started.

Creative Talents Unleashed: Tell us a little about yourself and your background?

Nolan: I am originally from Queens NY and have been in Atlanta since 1995. Worked for MTV for nine years and had the opportunity to relocate. I graduated from SUNY at Old Westbury with a B.S. degree in business management. Divorced for seven years and the father of five children, three girls and two boys. I will also be fifty-seven this August.

Creative Talents Unleashed: So when did you fall in love with poetry or writing in general, when did you decide this life was for you? Tell us a bit about that discovery process.

Nolan: In 2009-2010 I was dating someone and wanted to express how I felt about them. I wrote a couple of poems which she enjoyed. The relationship ended a few months later and so did my writing. Then in 2010 for an unknown reason I just began writing poems, my experiences drove the words and I tried many different poetic styles. I shared with family and friends who liked my work. Not knowing if my poetry had any quality I researched the internet and discovery the variety of poetry websites and began posting my scribes. The feedback was very positive. Even the negative comments fueled my passion to continue. After a few hundred poems a friend suggested that I put them together in book form. Thus began the journey to discover self publishing.

Creative Talents Unleashed: Why do you write, what is it that you’re trying to communicate through your work?

Nolan: The reason I write poetry is because I’m visual and using words is an alternate way to describe what and how I am feeling. Some of what I communicate is who I am and also to relate to others similar life experiences that we all go through. When a reader resonates with my poetry, it gives me the feeling that my voice is truly being heard.

Creative Talents Unleashed: Where does your inspiration come from, what might inspire you at any moment to write a story or poem?

Nolan: Great question. Something that I have gone through, also my imagination can fuel the fire. Music or just my surroundings, especially nature (storms, sunsets, the sky) motivates and brings either the title or the words.

Creative Talents Unleashed: What was the hardest thing about writing your book?

Nolan: Just being able to form the categories into which the poems transition into.

Creative Talents Unleashed: What was the easiest thing about writing your book?

Nolan: Working with Creative Talents Unleashed made the whole process very easy.

Creative Talents Unleashed: There are many authors who say that in the process of writing a book you learn things about yourself. Did you learn anything in your book writing process about yourself, if so what?

Nolan: That I can dream and make it into a reality. Seeing my work in print is breathtaking. The sense of accomplishment makes me happy. I learned that I can express my feelings with words and people can understand more about me. I crave to be understood.

Creative Talents Unleashed: What in your view is the role or responsibility of a writer or poet, if there is any?

Nolan: I feel it depends on the person. Everyone is not political or needs to comment on society. For me what happens around me can spark a piece. For example my latest poem is about a young lady that sings in the choir at our Church and how her voice moves me and the congregation’s spirit.

Creative Talents Unleashed: What are your ambitions as a writer, where do you hope to see yourself in say 5 years?

Nolan: That I come to be known by my peers as a poet that produces worthwhile scribes. Also to continue publishing more books. And to make a financial impact (enough to be comfortable).

Creative Talents Unleashed: Who is your favorite writer or poet? Perhaps you have a favorite quote from them that you would like to share.

Nolan: Definitely Langston Hughes and this moved me when I really got into writing poetry, “Hold fast to your dreams, for without them life is a broken winged bird that cannot fly”.

Creative Talents Unleashed: What advice would you give to aspiring writers who have dreams of publishing or making writing a career choice?

Nolan: Accept all feedback, positive or negative. Stay true to your belief in your talents and don’t be shaken by anything or anyone.

A poem from his book “Journey to the Poetic Light: Illuminations”

Time Between Scribes

(Roses and Wine)

Smelling Roses, sipping Wine
Time pours as words marinate
Into a smooth but
tart chardonnay
Been challenged to taste the
Wine and write a few lines
As it passes my lips
I anticipate the rush of
Flavor caressing my lips
Her liquid flow is always tasteful
I find myself searching for the
Next vintage to explore
As a gentle breeze can become a
Raging wind
So the words of the poetess explode to cover
The color of grey
To blast my senses with the shocking Red
Of passion

Preface . . .
I enjoy the sun and the warmth it brings. As I continued to write poems a theme emerged. After my first book, “Into My Rotation, a Collection of Scribes” my writing continued. After some time I began thinking about the next project. Light gives me energy and a zest for life. My scribes spoke to me as to who I am. Light exposes all, nothing can be hidden from yourself. Each poem I scribed illuminated a part of me. Therefore light became the theme to join all the poetry together. So simply put, this book is an expression of who I see myself as and the man I continue to grow into even at this stage of my life.
