Alliteration is an important poetic technique to master. It can provide you with a noticeable, repetitive sound within your writing that adds to the rhythm.
What is Alliteration?
Alliteration is a technique where the beginning sounds of words repeat. This means that you do not have to repeat the same letters as long as there is the same sound at the beginnings of the words. For example, “cat” and “kettle” both have the same sound at the beginning, despite starting with different letters. A more complicated form of alliteration can be made by repeating the first syllables of the words.
When you are creating a piece with alliteration, you do not have to use the same sound at the beginning of every single word. There are also no rules of how much alliteration you should use: a good technique when writing alliteration is to read it back to yourself. If you cannot spot the alliteration, then your readers will probably not be able to spot it either.
