Writing Tip: There Are Great Characters Out There (In The Real World)

We have all seen people who have made us curious. How many times have you looked at someone and wondered what makes them tick? Their life story, their interests, the events that have led them to be where they are now … there are countless things that interest us about people we do not know. When we build up stories about other people from the bits of information that we might have, we are creating a character of our own.

Another way in which strangers can inspire us is through their actions and small snippets of conversation that we hear between them. People can say things that make us laugh and wonder what discussion they might be involved in. Can you fit these words into a story or use them as the central theme of a poem? Can you consider why that individual might be acting in the way they are? It could be something silly, like a bee that they are trying to get away from, or something more serious and personal that deeply affects their character.

Creating memorable characters is central to building stories that people can identify with and find interesting, but there is no need to begin them from scratch. There are endless amounts of people out there who you can use to create striking and realistic individuals to include in your writing.
