Spelling and good grammar are essential to good writing. If you make frequent mistakes in either of these areas, then your readers can become confused or distracted from your piece. They complete what you have written by supporting it and making it appear professional, but they do not necessarily make your writing good by themselves. A weak sentence is still a weak sentence whether the spelling and grammar are correct or not.
This is why creativity should come first when you are writing. You need to focus on the content of what you are writing when you begin, and not how it is laid out on the page. Later on, you can edit, change punctuation, check your spelling and replace or rewrite as you please. But in a first draft, these elements are not essential.
When you read through your draft, you will be more likely to spot these mistakes or changes in the mood of your writing. You will be able to tell the feeling of your writing and the places where words do not seem to work together, as well as where you could change the lengths of sentences or the punctuation within your sentences.
So the next time you sit down to write, let editing take a back seat! Your creativity is more important.
