I Dedicate This Book To…

The meat of your book is now complete. Now it is time to add a few garnishes in the beginning and at the end. You ponder who you would like to dedicate your book to. It is a most difficult task trying to figure out who should be acknowledged on this page.

EE Cummings 2

From No Thanks by E.E. Cummings

It could be the names of close family and friends. It could be a group of people or a cause you support. It could even be your worst enemy. Some authors have included conversations with others or a short amusing snippet. Author E.E. Cummings even went as far as thanking the 14 publishers who rejected his poetry manuscript and titled the collection No Thanks. Even more amusing, he made the list of their names into the shape of an urn.

Don’t let this part of the process stress you out. Take some time to really think about it. You can get as creative as you want or keep it simple.

The next time you read a book, don’t skip out on reading the dedication page, as it can sometimes be a very entertaining read. Below are some of the most unique dedications from some very famous authors:

Charles Bukowski, Post Office – 1971

This is presented as a work of fiction and dedicated to nobody

 Hugh Howey, Wool – 2011

 Hugh Howey 1

Mark Twain, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn – 1985

Persons attempting to find a motive in this narrative will be prosecuted; persons attempting to find a moral in it will be banished; persons attempting to find a plot in it will be shot.

BY ORDER OF THE AUTHOR.

Shel Silverstein, Where the Sidewalk Ends – 1974

 Shel Silverstein 1
