Author Interview with Veronica Thornton “Universal Colloquies Inside of Me”

KIMG0238Introducing Author Veronica Thornton

Veronica Thornton a.k.a. Vee was always gifted with the art of verbal and written communication although she was never a big talker yet quite the observer and listener.

Vee currently resides in Cleveland, Ohio is a survivor of domestic violence and mother of two.  In her youth she wrote notes to herself and others when she could not verbalize what she was feeling. Many thought her writings to be poetic and inspiring in nature.  Her empathetic feelings caused her to keep writing later in life as a way to release all the emotions and questions that were presented to her that otherwise remained nonverbal. While most of her writings remained private it was during her educational pursuits Vee was strongly encouraged to pursue a writing career due to her versatility in topics, styles and ability to articulate her thoughts in a clear, creative yet relatable manner.

Vee is a member of the OAC along with belonging to various online poetry groups. Vee has previously contributed to online magazines along with being included in a poetic anthology and compilation of stories and poems for domestic violence.

Creative Talents Unleashed: Hi Vee, thank you for agreeing to this interview.

Vee:  Thank you for having me.

Creative Talents Unleashed: Tell us a little about yourself and your background?

Vee: Well long story short,  I am a poet/writer and mother of two from Cleveland, Ohio.

Creative Talents Unleashed: So when did you fall in love with poetry or writing in general, when did you decide this life was for you? Tell us a bit about that discovery process.

Vee: I always liked writing because it was an easy way for me to release my true feelings about a lot of things without worrying about someone trying to read too much into what I’m saying.  When people read they tend to take a little longer to think about it before and if they respond.  It was just that many people that what I wrote sounded poetic in nature and I would brush it off like yeah okay.  It wasn’t until about 5 years ago when I decided this was the life for me.

Creative Talents Unleashed: Why do you write, what is it that you’re trying to communicate through your work?

Vee: The best way I can answer that is  . . .I write because nobody listens but the right words get their attention. I write it because I can empathize with it whether or not another realizes it see people forget we are all connected in ways we would never expect what’s in between life and death is what we do until our last breath but some don’t know how to unleash their stress so I write in hopes it can help me and them sort out some of this mess. Even if they’re not listening something is going to get their attention and it may be something that some are scared to mention. I can only tell you about what I’ve lived or observedwhat I’ve learned and a little of what I heard to some it will make sense and to others it will sound absurd but I got them thinking talking about my words letting them sink in like quick sand using words and feelings that transcend across here and distant lands so I write even when no one’s listening because I speak about what some may fail to mention their words constantly talk to me haunting me so I organize and write them precisely.

Creative Talents Unleashed: Where does your inspiration come from, what might inspire you at any moment to write a story or poem?

Vee: Anything can inspire me.  It depends on what runs through my head when I hear or see something.  For example, my poem Lunar Energy.  I wrote that after just gazing at a full moon for a while and when I sat back at the computer I just started to write one word just seemed to connect with the next and I had no thoughts of a book at that point.  They were just thoughts that turned into words based on the only way I knew how to describe what I saw and felt in that moment under the moonlight.

Creative Talents Unleashed: What was the hardest thing about writing your book?

Vee: Selecting what would go in the book was definitely the hardest.  I had to scrutinize what would be put in and how it may be received in conjunction with who the audience is.  Also the editing was hard.   I’m a patient person but the editing is a beast.  I had to pass it to someone else to edit because after a while it can be overwhelming to scrutinize your own work as well as time consuming

Creative Talents Unleashed: What was the easiest thing about writing your book?

Vee: The easiest thing about writing the book was the freedom of just letting the words speak for me and tell the stories and lessons that my pen seems to want to talk about that many people only look at one way.

Creative Talents Unleashed: There are many authors who say that in the process of writing a book you learn things about yourself. Did you learn anything in your book writing process about yourself, if so what?

Vee: I learn something about myself every time I write a poem because I wonder where some of the thoughts come from that leads to me to write it that way on any particular day.  It’s like my own checks and balances in a sense.  If I write a sad poem and depending on the metaphors and things that I use after it’s written, I go back and read it thinking what made you so sad and why did you say it like this.  Which leads me to check my thoughts and feelings about some things that I may not have realized I was bothered by at the time.

Creative Talents Unleashed: What in your view is the role or responsibility of a writer or poet, if there is any?

Vee: The role or responsibility of a writer or poet is to get a message across artistically that is imperative to pass on to the reader in a way that the reader can understand and relate to.  The whole point is to convey a message that may possibly enhance this world for the better

Creative Talents Unleashed: What are your ambitions as a writer, where do you hope to see yourself in say 5 years?

Vee:  Well actually I see myself creating another book.  Allowing my writing skills to be seen past poetry.  I have the ability to write a variety of ways and on a variety of subjects plus there are many lessons and stories to be told that can

Creative Talents Unleashed: Who is your favorite writer or poet? Perhaps you have a favorite quote from them that you would like to share.

Vee: Funny thing is most people are poets and don’t even know it.  Everyone tells their story in one way or the other but if I had to choose a favorite quote it would be:

“The superior man is distressed by the limitations of his ability; he is not distressed by the fact that men do not recognize the ability that he has.”

– Confucius

Creative Talents Unleashed: What advice would you give to aspiring writers who have dreams of publishing or making writing a career choice?

Vee: Everyone has a unique outlook on life and as a writer/poet you have to be willing to take the good with the bad and be willing to still put out what you think fairly represents you and the audience that you are trying to appeal to and get their attention

A Poem From Universal Colloquies Inside of Me

Cosmic Powers

Harnessing the powers of all that is

and all the universe gives

transforming into energy with life that lives

those that choose to manipulate, orchestrate or regulate

have taken a path that without change seals their fate

if it came easy then the road you took was slippery

guiding you on a path to an unmentionable dimension

still you are blind until you arrive at the enter-here sign

but those that harness the same power and feed it

with loving, sharing, caring energies

pass that power to others creating a glowing array of colors

exploding like fireworks seen at night for sure

but like shooting stars throughout the day

but this road ain’t for the faint of heart

it’s filled with tests of determination

to fulfill this you must access all universal energies

to overcome negativity thrown at you constantly

while you try to light up the sky

they will attempt to destroy that little twinkle in your eye

because they’re too scared to even reach high

while you harness the power to fly.

Preface . . .

Who Am I

I’m the caterpillar that turns into the butterfly

I’m the whispering in the winds when you walk by

I’m the light behind the twinkling in your eyes

I’m sometimes the conscious you despise

I can be your worst nightmare or your best friend

I can help end life or help it begin

I’ll be there when you lose and there when you win

I can keep an open-mind or give a swift kick in the behind

I’m your relief when you are stressed

I’m the ears that listen to the releasing of your unrest

Divinely created I am a woman truly blessed.
