Mother’s Day began as a day to honor mothers who have made sacrifices for their children. The day was penned by Anna Jarvis, as a tribute to her mother after she passed away. Her intention was for it to be a personal celebration, where family members would wear carnations in church services and write endearing letters to their mothers. Unfortunately, many took advantage of the opportunity to capitalize on the holiday, and Anna became disgusted by the transformation taking place. She ended up spending the rest of her life fighting against the retailers who commercialized the holiday, and would end up dying without any children of her own.
If you have a mom that just appreciates the time you spend with her, then be thankful that she doesn’t need you to spend a fortune on her to express your love. Some mom’s would just enjoy a home-cooked meal or a day without doing chores. Some may even prefer a day at the beach or a spa day. Most importantly, don’t let it be the only day to appreciate mom. Let her know throughout the year that her hard work paid off and you are grateful for the sacrifices she made.
If you are a writer, maybe you have a mom who enjoys reading a letter or a poem on some old fashioned stationary. If not, find a lovely poem and put it in a frame for your mom. Here are some writers who have celebrated moms through their poetry, expressing their appreciation for the ones who raised us.
EDGAR ALLAN POE expresses the loss of his mother in this deeply devotional poem of his love for her.
JEAN NORHAUS explores how fragile a job motherhood can be, through a visual poem about picking dandelions.
ROBERT LOUIS STEVENSON speaks from a mother’s point of view as she envisions a child frolicking outside, but one that is out of reach because he has grown up.
