A Love Letter
She sits on the front step in the same place every afternoon.
She sits waiting in silence,
the only sounds the birds and an occasional passing car.
Her mind wanders back to when he sat with her,
his arm easy around her shoulder,
her head resting on his chest.
He’s been gone for a while now,
though his memory keeps her company.
She hears his heartbeat in every song that moves her,
in every thunderstorm that rocks her.
His touch burned into her memory with fingers of fire scorching lines across her skin.
So she sits on the front step in the same place every afternoon,
writing love letters she’ll never send.
