Writing Tip: Connect – Don’t Divide

Photo 24As humans, we have choice. We have always been free to express our opinions in this country, most of the time without any repercussions. It seems as if times are changing and as a nation, we are ripping apart at the seams. Social Media has played a big part in that division; a way for all to have a voice while hiding the ugliness within behind a screen. As writers, we have an internal struggle whether to use our gift for the trending causes to garner some attention, with the fear that we may lose part of that wider audience. It is why we should make it our goal to uplift with our words. Appeal to the audience to connect, rather than divide. The entire world is in need of hope and healing, and there are many ways we can turn all the negative into positive.

The Political Circus – there have been way too many arguments and unfriending going on because of who to vote for this year. No politician is perfect and he or she alone cannot fix all our problems. The most important of all is that many have fought for our right to vote and regardless of whom the candidates are, it is a privilege to do so. So write about why voting is important, write about how coming together as a nation is the answer, and use your voice to unite.

abraham-lincolnRace Relations – It seems as if we have taken a step back in the racial divide that has been festering. There is no doubt that there are still many who cannot see past the color of skin, but instead of feeding off the incidents that the media highlights, change the perspective. What if we were all purple? What if we did not even have pigment and were transparent beings like the ghost shrimp or jellyfish? The shades of our skin do not make us who we are. Delve into the inside of the people you have met and write about their souls.

Spiritual Warfare – Man has always used religion to conquer and divide. It doesn’t matter which religion; evil can be found in all, and we throw in the word “radical” to describe the horrible things human beings do in the name of their faith. Spirituality has also changed people for the better, but those are not the stories often shared or in the news. Instead of indulging in the negative aspects, share the miracles and acts of kindness you have seen or read about.

It’s hard to avoid the negative stories popping up on your social media feeds or in the news, and it is so easy to get sucked into an argument with complete strangers when we feel the need to say something. But when so many people have so many different opinions, it becomes tiresome and uses up way too much energy. Instead, use it as inspiration to write something positive instead. Be the bigger person to step out of the revolving door and use your voice for the good of mankind.
