Art in the City

Art 2 cropAlways a suburban kind of girl, I never had interest in a big city. I visited a few of the major ones from Miami to Orlando, but never really paid attention to what they had to offer. I was always under the impression it was not a nice place to live, with a high crime rate and filled with undesirable people. My new job took me smack in the middle of Downtown West Palm Beach, Florida and looking at this place through a writer’s eye this time around, I have to say it has been absolutely amazing and somewhere I definitely took for granted.

The building where I work is a few blocks away from a huge library, a bunch of great restaurants, and all major events that usually take place. On top of that, the city is big on art and I am surrounded by the art district on all sides. On my lunch outings, I no longer walk with my head to the ground, but I look at every speck of color on brick walls, the sculptures in lobbies, and the creative window displays and signs. I stop to take pictures of anything interesting and I smile when I discover something new and beautiful.

West lobby 7What catches me off guard sometimes is the people who actually say hello to you as you pass them by on the sidewalks, and the cars that stop for you to cross the street. I’m not quite sure I can get used to hearing a train whiz by a few times a day, or the constant construction of more high-rise buildings on every other corner, but I wouldn’t cross it off my list to live there if that chance presented itself and I could afford to do so.

I’m still in search for some poetry on the sidewalks or on the side of a building. I have met some amazing people who share my love for art and hopefully as I meet more, maybe one day I can be the one to bring some poetry into the atmosphere.

Art 3 cropIf you’ve never visited a major city near you, do some research, plan a trip and maybe you will discover some hidden treasures in your neck of the woods. I would love to hear some of your artistic adventures enjoying that city life.
