Tin Can Mechanic – Brenda-Lee Ranta

Wiping his greasy hands on the oil rag

tinkering with an old engine he’s been

working on for over ten long years

body rusted out, confetti wheel wells

it was a thing of beauty once

No customers come for repairs anymore

fibreglass hoods, plastic bumpers

He decrees they are garbage cars

with no comprehension of computerized

dashboards, ‘gosh darn cockpits!’

‘All sizzle, no steak,’ he retorts,

patting the old rusty coke machine

not filled in two years, salesmen gone,

the occasional passerby spends ten

on gas or to use the mens room

Still displayed in the filmy window

old cans of oil, wiper fluid, now murky,

contents sunk to the bottom, sludge,

His business is closed, but not a soul

is around to tell him the sad truth

Returning to the old engine,

he muttered, ‘All sizzle, no steak.”
