Writing Tip: Resolutions for Writers

photo-2If one of your goals for the New Year is to write more, then don’t let anything get in your way. To be a better writer, you have to never stop writing. In between the chaos of life, there has to be something you can write about. If you juggle a full time job and a family, getting those moments of inspiration can quickly pass you by, and by the time you actually get to sit down and write, you can’t recall what your thoughts were.

Stock up on notebooks, buy yourself a tablet, or find an app on your phone that you can use to jot down ideas. Seize every moment you can to write and you can always come back to it later and create something magnificent. Once you have the tools and the time, here are a few tips to help you with those writing resolutions:

  1. Show your Scars –  you didn’t have the best year and you hope for a better 2017. Write about the wounds that have left scars and how you overcame the battle. Encourage others who may be in the same situation how you fought and won. Show other the hope you have for the future and how you are prepared to face more obstacles.
  2. Pick a new Genre – if you’re no longer inspired to write poetry, try your hand at a short story or maybe something fictional. See if journalism excites you by composing an informative article for a blog or make a live video to share with others about an event.
  3. Do some Research – seek some wisdom and educate yourself about another country or culture and write about it. Look up the most beautiful places in the world, or read about another person’s strange habits. Watch a documentary about a rare or endangered animal, and share your knowledge with readers. Pick a word in the dictionary you never used before and write about its origin. There’s a whole world to explore.
  4. Listen – If you find yourself in a place surrounded by people, just take a few moments to listen to their conversations. Jot down some notes as you do and let their words inspire you. Write about them from a 3rd person point of view. Listen to the noises you hear as you get through the day. Describe how some of these sounds make you feel.
  5. Use Social Media – Browsing social media may be time consuming and exhausting at times. Most people use it to complain about their frustrations or share what is trending at the moment. Use the negative aspects of what you see and write the opposite. Turn hate and anger into love. Focus on the good things happening in the world instead of feeding on the dramatic.
