Author Donna J. Sanders: Puppets

We find ourselves

face to pavement

painted with footprints

broken puppets

trampled on by heartless wretches

and demons who laugh when we fall

But we have cartilage of courage

to pull our strings taut

and shields of asphalt

to secure our souls

from baleful foes

who can only tremble

in fear of themselves
