Five Star Readers’ Favorite Review Universal Colloquies Inside of Me

Book Review

Universal Colloquies Inside of Me by Veronica Thornton is a collection of poems inspired by Veronica’s own personal struggle and life. I found the title of the book intriguing and the poetry even more so. Universal Colloquies Inside of Me starts with a brief introduction by the author through a poem that beautifully expresses what to expect from the poems and, in fact, the rest of the collection does not disappoint. With titles such as Salty Tears, Ride or Die, and No Fairytales, the poems are a mix of tragic and hopeful, love and disappointment, sorrow and joy, and beautifully capture the inner emotions and feelings that are often left unsaid and unexpressed.

Universal Colloquies Inside of Me by Veronica Thornton is unique in the sense that it is inspired by the author’s own personal life and journey. The issue is a particularly important one since Veronica herself has been the victim of domestic violence. The poems are touching and, at the same time, filled with a strong sense of self and strength as Veronica puts on paper the emotions and feelings inside that cannot always be expressed verbally. I found the collection to be extremely inspiring and I ended up having a few favorites such as “Ugly” and “When” that I would want to go back and re-read. I also greatly appreciated the fact that the book highlights important social issues such as domestic abuse/violence, racism, and what it means to be a woman in this society. This is definitely a collection I would want to read more than once!
