March 2017 Poet of the Month
Markus Fleischmann is a free thinker and writer who lives in Texas. ‘A Tome of Musings‘, his first book of poetry, explores the heart of a moral being, love and heartache, joyfulness and sadness. His writing is a collection of thoughts and dreams and beautifully spun into verse and rhyme.
He wrote his first piece at the age of 16 and has been actively writing ever since. Markus began writing at such a young age to help combat peer pressure and depression, but he began to realize that there are more meaningful reasons found in his thoughts of love and heartache, sadness and hope, and felt by all at some time in life. He wishes to connect with others through his words to show that there is no need to feel alone.
When Markus isn’t writing, he spends his time planning future goals with his career, family and his writing and can be often found sitting under a shaded tree in deep thought pondering life and the human heart.

Why is Poetry Important?
Poetry is important because it allows the writer, the poet to weave together emotions from all aspects of life into his words to be shared and understood by others, it is a way to tell a story, a song read that was written from the heart and one can connect with its meaning. Poetry is art, just like painters and musicians and magicians we are the ones who keep fantasy and imagination alive.
What prompted you to begin writing poetry?
I started writing when I was 16, I wrote my first poem after my first heartbreak, I guess it was me trying to identify what I felt at that moment and I needed to write it down which at the end turned into something beautiful and personal.
How does a poem begin for you, with an idea, a form, or an image?
My writings begin with thoughts, they just come, I don’t sit and try to write about a certain subject, my writing, my thoughts come to me and they are always different but after influenced by emotions, the way I feel at that moment, the weather and even the time of day whether it may be light of day or dark of night makes what I write so unique.
What conditions help you with your writing process?
What helps me to write is total silence, it’s when I can hear my own heart beat or the whisper of the wind tickling the leaves on a swaying tree surrounded by the buzzing of bees on a early summer’s day.
I write when I’m happy, sad, depressed, angry, joyful, afraid, these are all emotions that to me are triggers of thoughts needing a home on paper.
Where do you Write?
I write just about anywhere, when I’m out in public I use my phone note app to store a thought that may creep up at that moment, but mostly I write at home, my favorite place to write is sitting in the backyard under a tree watching the sky and clouds roll bye.
What is the relationship between your speaking voice and your written voice?
My speaking voice is like the mirror image of my writing voice, I say what I think or feel and I write what I think or feel.
What makes a poem, “good?”
A good poem is the one that just comes from deep within, it needs to be free and raw, honest and not perfect, poems are reflections of the writer and when the writer opens himself up and writes with the true emotion without feeling shamed or indifferent that’s when a poem is good, be naked of your thoughts, be open and vulnerable but be honest and most all respectful to yourself and the ones who read.

Sands of Time
Time
What is time?
The changing of seasons
The beat of a heart
The bitter end of a perfect start
The birth of a dying soul
Time is but a grain of sand
The essence of warm and cold
The distance dreams travel
The wishing on stars
Time is the blink of an eye
Raindrops falling from cloudy skies
Time is the tick of a clock
It is love found
Heart torn apart
Time is the aging of trees
The buzzing of bees
Time is both dawn and dusk
Time is, has and was but will never be
Time is reason
A measure of young and old
It is a fabric
A friend and foe
It is a word with action
It is a reaction
Time is forward and can’t be bent
Time has a scent
Time is but a grain of sand
