Author D.B. Hall – I Dare You

Initial steps are hard

mud oozes between my toes

while pristine water

bites at my legs

with an angry chill.

I glance ahead

see faster deeper water

clumps of snow linger in dark shade

on the other side.

A quick shivering pivot

I see all the guys

bundled up and warm

hooping and hollering

at my goosebumped nakedness.

A dare is a dare.

Another step forward

deeper

and I feel the cut

of the water’s icy blades

slice its way up my legs.

Then I gather my breath

and plunge in.

The instant shock

of millions of frigid barbs.

Reflexes take control

pulling me into in a ball

the whim of the current

ferries me swiftly downstream

in a surreal frigid darkness

fractured by sun beams.

A few seconds of eternity pass

I spread out

and launch

toward the surface.

A pale rocket of bones bursts forth

gasps for air

full of unbounded exuberance

I race to the edge

whooping my war cry

my friends race down to me.

I race around the meadows

yelling in glorious abandon

a posse of maniacs

on my trail.

I circle around

to collapse upon my clothes

lungs burn

heart on fire

aware of every living thing.

The posse arrives

in various stages of hoarseness

attack with unbridled enthusiasm

they dogpile me.

Me, their hero for that day

that day I lived

live, I dare you.

About the Author

David Hall was born in a small town called Mount Airy (A.K.A Mayberry) nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains which are part of the large Appalachian Mountain chain. His early life involved a lot of traveling with his missionary parents, which involved stints of living in Mexico and Bolivia. His poetry reflects a love for nature and life mixed with a sense of the rustic Americana spirit and sprinkled with a lingering sense of the spiritual guidance infused by his southern religious upbringing. David has always been able to live in the moment enjoying it to the fullest while being able to be separated within himself seeking something more. Poetry is one of those outlets that gives him that something more. The diversity of genres and endless array of topics allow him to dive into poetry with reckless abandon or with fine-tuned precision; whichever is needed. Like a prism there are many sides of David, from the emotional connections when dealing with death, to the touch of the spring breeze on your neck hairs, David’s poetry can put you there.
