straight-jacketed times

the songbird in my heart has died –
my chainless soul now lives
and sleeps without identity
in bare-bosomed nights
in the vitreous pour
of a full moon

imagine, if I could gather the fruit of the sun
with the burial of the stars, but I became
enwrapped and disorientated
by the first ray of sunlight
looking down on
a new-made grave

a sad procession of matchstick men followed –
I was clouded by the dead-march of
a fathomless universe –
I had to remind myself that
in cities of freedom no one
hovers over another

bad has now changed
places with the good
and I – I was back
in straight-jacketed times
and lives in imaginary
tilted windmills
