Writer Highlight Featuring: C. J. Spammer

‘I’m sorry,’ I say,
as I wipe a tear
from the angry, red handprint
staining your cheek.

‘I’m sorry,’ I say,
as you slink away
from my touch,
your shoulders
raised in defence.

‘I’m sorry,’ I say,
as you turn your back to me,
shutting me out,
in order to preserve
what little “you”
there is left.

‘I’m sorry,’ I say,
but my words hit your back
and fall;
a pathetic heap
on the hardwood floor.
