Will the Caged Bird Fly Free?
It’s painful to hope,
to believe that a caged bird
can fly free,
to harbor the dream
that if you reached out your hand,
you could touch
a world of possibility.
My hand is suspended,
paused,
knowing that in one more heartbreak,
it would all be ended.
So will I be
still ever reaching,
the world perpetually outside
of my grasp,
or will I seize my life
with one final,
startled gasp,
as my battered wings wearily
fly me away,
into the sunlight
and one endless,
glorious, new day.
