Single On A Friday Night – Author Lyne Beringer

Are you here to keep me company?

You say to the misery

A breeze rushes by in the chilling cold

You fumble for your keys

The door gives way so easily

You trip into the hall

If you had known the outcome

You could have had yourself a ball

But now your friend is emptiness

As you turn on every light

You bump into a table

And squeal from the sudden fright

Every room is checked for monsters

Just to put yourself at ease

You’re sure you heard a whisper

As you are fighting back a sneeze

Good God you can’t remember

Or pin down any age

Where you and the ghosts of yesterday

Were trapped in the very same cage

You slip into your P.J.’s

The one’s that have the feet

Head into the kitchen

To grab yourself a treat

Another busy Friday

Screamed right by the afternoon

The grays and blacks that own the night

Have settled in too soon

You comb your hair and brush your teeth

Then dive for the king size bed

A book and thoughts of Monday

Keep the voices silent in your head

Now it’s after midnight

You rub your bleary eyes

Put away the lonely party hat

Let sleep be the evening prize

I never thought the word “writer” would be used to describe me and the thoughts that tumble out of my head onto paper. It’s a new me, giving away words all neatly packaged up in rhyme.

I have lived in the interior of Alaska off and on for nearly twenty years. Alaska gets in your blood. It lures you in then takes your soul hostage, becoming part of who you are, who you become. Every summer, the days are warm, long, and inviting. Tourists descend in droves, racing toward the next adventure, and a rich, colorful history provides plenty of businesses with trinkets to sell the Alaskan nostalgia.  Anything seems possible when you are standing outside at midnight and the stars are nowhere to be found. That is until winter rolls back around.
