One toke, two tokes,
Plus two more makes it four
I cough up a heartfelt thank you
As I stumble out the door
Sounds of bursting bubbles
That were slain inside the glass
Brought on so much paranoia
I forget to stop for gas
I’m driving down the middle
Of a short but winding road
Begin to really wonder
If I’ll actually make it home
I start to feel a wee bit giddy
Blowing through the last red light
Damn I didn’t realize
It’s the middle of the night
I pull into the driveway
In one unguarded piece
Go in and look for something
That will bring me sweet release
One long pull
And it ain’t no bull
What I say is true
My head is swimming, drowning
In the memory of you
What do I do?
How do I make it stop?
I quickly check my wallet
Decide it’s time to shop
I flip through all my contacts
I’d like to score a bill
Or maybe someone somewhere
Can sell me a magic pill
I thrash around in darkness
A zombie of the night
I somehow even manage
To give myself a fright
I take an unexpected break
To fall down by the car
Pretend it’s an outdoor living space
With a killer view of stars
Now I lay me down to sleep
It’s turned into tomorrow
I’m hoping when I finally wake
There’s no more binge of sorrow

About the Author
I never thought the word “writer” would be used to describe me and the thoughts that tumble out of my head onto paper. It’s a new me, giving away words all neatly packaged up in rhyme.
I have lived in the interior of Alaska off and on for nearly twenty years. Alaska gets in your blood. It lures you in then takes your soul hostage, becoming part of who you are, who you become. Every summer, the days are warm, long, and inviting. Tourists descend in droves, racing toward the next adventure, and a rich, colorful history provides plenty of businesses with trinkets to sell the Alaskan nostalgia. Anything seems possible when you are standing outside at midnight and the stars are nowhere to be found. That is until winter rolls back around.
