For Love of Elmo

He chatters

not real words

but it mimics language

Elmo under his arm,

clutches it in sleep,

in his car seat,

in the shopping cart;

chatters to Elmo all day

He stacks blocks

in towers too tall

for a two year old baby,

an architect, an engineer;

sophisticated structures

Elmo watches

with plastic eyes,

but he watches all the same

We call his name,

he doesn’t respond,

suddenly hugging

us tightly, tenderly;

wordless “I love yous”

Smiles that are

liquid sunshine

warming the soul

bursting it’s seams

tugging at the intangible

He buckles,

he unbuckles snaps;

Elmo waits for him to stop

We love him

fiercely, in ways

we can’t comprehend

this beautiful boy

eyes speaking of heaven

We love him,

his idiosyncrasies

his wordless language

we understand innately

he is a complexity of perfection

We share

his love with Elmo

patiently awaiting his hugs
