Why does a caterpillar turn into a butterfly
do you think it thinks it’s about to die
or does it dream of flying through the sky
does the caterpillar have a rough life
before its wings sprout and take flight
it is low to the ground all furry trying to get around
it must be scared of getting stepped on but it has to press on
then it’s forced into a cocoon
where there’s not much room
for the metamorphosis that comes soon
not knowing what others will see it can’t wait to break free
bursting out of the cocoon a new life it will assume
able to soar and fly free beautifully
do you think it ever has memories of all of its setbacks
other animal attacks or the times it barely got away
at times just surviving day to day
maybe that’s why it flies that way
it glides through the air without a care
looking as light as a feather and beautifully put together
maybe the caterpillar’s purpose
is to show us that life is worth it
it does mimic our existence exhibiting so much persistence
learning many lessons early in life
while learning to adjust to the struggles and strife
making changes under a metamorphosis
while in a cocoon fortress
then with new insight you claim your wings
spread them and take flight
beautiful and free
now understanding what life was meant to be
so why a caterpillar to a butterfly
starting out vulnerable and small
learning about life how to get around
knowing all the time its transformation bound
while gaining new insight then take off in flight
exploring new sights elevating to new heights
remember the goal is to soar and fly
being comfortable in your own skin, shining from within
seeing things from beginning to end
allowing the metamorphosis to set in
finding what you were meant to be
and embracing it beautifully
I think that’s what the caterpillar wants us to see
at least that’s a caterpillar’s purpose to me.
