Inspiration Call: Poetry is an act of appreciation…

Inspiration Call: Poetry is an act of appreciation. With our increasingly busy schedules, we lose our ability to appreciate. Poets must resist the modern temptation to overlook what holds meaning in our lives. Identify something in your surroundings—a rusted hoe draped in spider webs, an unfashionable dress abandoned by time, a wine cork buried in a drawer of unpaid bills—and write a poem that appreciates these lonely items.

  1. Padded Leather Sandal

    In the bottom drawer
Covered in a thin layer of dust
A trinket from a time gone by
He was just a little guy
    Tiptoeing in my shadow
Somewhere along the way, he became a
    young man
As tall as an oak tree
But that tiny blue sandal with the painted on
anchor, serves as a reminder of the days when
he was fresh faced and carefree.

  2. Pennies in my car
    dirty, shiny, coppery
    Pennies in my car
    of no big value
    alone
    Pennies in my car
    abandoned
    dropped
    Pennies in my car
    left alone
    without a care
    Pennies in my car
    value, just a cent
    gathered with others
    rolled to fifty cents
