Child by Jeffery Martin

A child held out his hand and I could do nothing

but comment on a blank page

about the senselessness of it all

Painfully I admitted that the answers

resided somewhere in the gap

between the rich and poor

That child stared blankly as I attempted to explain

why his hunger was a necessary evil

in the scheme of haves and have nots

He did not understand how the sickness in his eyes

and rumbling in his belly

were an insurance policy guaranteeing

that someone somewhere would be sipping the finest wine

while basking in the glow of generations of wealth

and prestige

This child was puzzled by the phrase

that he was the promise of tomorrow

when today it seemed to him

was so harsh

He challenged the authenticity of my poetry

weren’t poets catalysts for change? he asked

weren’t words those powerful little symbols

capable of striking the chord

of that which makes us most

human, most humane

if not through the custodian of words

from where would the relevance of dialogue come

Afterwards my pen seemed heavy

and the blank page foreboding

all of the oceans of inspiration

became mere calm quiet ripples

turned upside down by a child’s questions

questions pertinent but clearly beyond

the intellectual threshold of this custodian of words
