The Old Gardener by Hugh Dysart

Ignorance grows like dandelions,

infecting enchanted gardens

Doubt clings to poisoned thought,

over running, overwhelming,

the ancient pillars of learning

An old gardener stands defeated

his tears feeding the ivies,

entangled in worn sandals

A millennium of lessons learned,

knowledge once pruned to brilliance,

lays decaying with disrespect

Searching his age-old memory,

trying to recall when the rot set in

When trust became superstition

When truth became lies,

fact became fiction,

believers became fools,

when love became hate

When man became animal

Turned his back, a moment in time,

the infestation began

Goodness and knowledge, never safe,

from creeping ignorance

Three Wise men, explorer, scientist, artist,

words once revered, now disdained

The old gardener resumes his work,

seeds strewn to the good earth

Evil grows like dandelions
