Self-destruction by Shantelle ‘Elle’ McLin

Destruction comes daily with a morbid mantra

Echoing sounds that resemble death

Two roadblocks and one dead-end

Salutations responses with confused confrontation

The ego long ago bruised and battered

Exhaustion greets and meets the body

While the white flag is rising, surrendering

Tired mind conforms to fatigued physicals

Self-destruction is not an option, but confirmation

The beatings that one has taken are of one’s own fault

Dance with the devil, flirt with the devil…

You might as well take on his beliefs

You can’t combat because you haven’t suited yourself to do so

You fall in line with the assembly

Reproducing and manufacturing the negativity that lies within

You flirt with sin

Elle About the Author

Recreational writing began for this author at the age of 9 in journal formatting.  Her creativeness was sparked in Middle school during a notable visit to the library with her best friend. With an outdated range of selections, she instantly identified with the poets’ generations before her; she had found her outlet. While facing great personal difficulties, Elle treated poetry as a feel-good remedy to her melancholic episodes. This would become freeing to a young and timid adolescent, as she discovered her voice. Writing would become a soother and her pen, a microphone to express her challenges.
