Gratitude by Jaz

thank u

to every poet who ever graced this mic

thank u

to every poet who ever stared down poetry

and lost

thanks for your courage

your passion

your wit

thanks to those who exchanged the morning sun

for poetry

I wanna thank u

for letting the words

split u open

and turn u out

For letting the words lift u

to higher levels of thinking

For allowing those words

to expose u

and heal u

nurture u

birth u

U could’ve chose not to answer the call

Many poets sleep on street grates

count yourself

among the living

and say a prayer for them

they’re supposed to be here

at this mic

This poet’s mama went through

129,600 minutes of morning sickness

and 25,200 seconds of labor just so

I could be here

to say Thank u.
