Secret of Mother by Brenda-Lee Ranta

Waking in the morning

To little faces of demand

for time

for love

for service

for Mother

What is  makes it so

this irreverent title

without fanfare

applying to millions

distinctive to you

and them

Meals whirl by her, on

an endless assembly line

washings that blow in the

wind, will be hung again

story books that are well

worn, will be read again

The life of Mother is repetitive

at times, a mundane existence

one day bleeding into the next

Yet irreplaceable to her babies,

who will grow to either praise

or despise past deeds of Mother

Mother dreamt downy dreams

in her impregnated state, while

sleeping with one hand resting

in an empty bassinet; the other

on her bloated tummy, longing

to embrace her precious miracle

That spelled the end of

sleeping in on weekends

leisurely shopping

social evenings

freedom

lack of purpose

Mother happily relinquished

her life, in exchange for the

life of her little ones; in them

she placed her hopes

her dreams,

her time,

her love

It is in some distant future

that she will have to set free

the product of her upbringing

and return to herself, attempting

to be reacquainted with personal

freedom; but sadly she may not

have any idea ‘what to do with it.’
