Jury Duty by Billy Charles Root

The quiet little city welcomes me

With the morning sunshine shining

And bird songs chirped

As I make my way to the awaiting courthouse

As of yet I do not know why I’m here

In a line with I assume other law abiding citizens

To be chosen or cleared of service

We all stood silently round

A room wrapped in paneling of brown

And carpet blue on the ground

And mauve was on every chair

I felt like I was in church

They even had some pews

And the judge began to ask

Reasons why he should let us pass

Or at least for certain days be excused

As I listened I began to think

About the kaleidoscope world full of different lives operating in perfect sync

Vacation days and school starting, doctor’s appointment and families parting

One man has a son with Hodgkin’s lymphoma starting chemotherapy

Made my reasons seem a bit unfair and cheap

We exited the courthouse

For the street we all head

But I choose the sidewalk

So I don’t end up dead

We all make our way back to our little lives

A deputy watches an inmate mow

Jumpsuit of orange glow

And I think to myself that wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be

Just another small town day

Of citizenship play
