Unrecognizable by Shantelle ‘Elle’ McLin

I don’t recognize me,

Not even in the light of the sun

Could I see beyond the distortion

Their lies

Have become

My truth

Their perception,

My mirror

They no longer throw stones

In replacement

Heavier artillery,

Hollow point bullets

Piercing a sunken chest

I wear a toe tag

Nameless

Unknown identity

I remain just a number

In the system

Systematic society

Where birth name

And social code

Is only known

I step among crowds overpopulated

Following the flow

Of feet beating against concrete pavement

Lost…

Buried beneath ashes

Of

The faked death of my mortal self

I live blended

With evil spirits

Gentle, loving, caring and forgiving mask

Now gone

In darkness

You no longer see a falsified persona

The paranoia of company kept

Disturbs my peace

There is an annoyance

Overflowing with intolerance

Again,

I don’t recognize me!

Elle About the Author

Recreational writing began for this author at the age of 9 in journal formatting.  Her creativeness was sparked in Middle school during a notable visit to the library with her best friend. With an outdated range of selections, she instantly identified with the poets’ generations before her; she had found her outlet. While facing great personal difficulties, Elle treated poetry as a feel-good remedy to her melancholic episodes. This would become freeing to a young and timid adolescent, as she discovered her voice. Writing would become a soother and her pen, a microphone to express her challenges.
