So Pretty by Maggie Mae

Your make-up looks wonderful!

A comment on a picture

In which I was wearing

Very little make-up

Many people commented

Only this comment

I found not complimentary

It really set my day off badly

I even asked my mom

In case I was being over sensitive

But she and my best friend

Agreed it was rude

That was not the end

They felt the need to message me

No wonder you have a man

Those red lips, who does your make-up?

Because honestly how could I

Get a man otherwise

How could I look so pretty?

Without someone else helping me

I did not post the picture

To get compliments however

Backhanded compliments

Simply show your ugly heart

Anthology: Microaggression

The authors of Microaggression – Then & Now are speaking out. They are victims themselves and bravely share their experiences, concerns, hopes and fears through poetry and prose. They speak of a lack of empathy and tolerance in society. They warn of how words can cut, stir, disrupt and destroy. They refuse to accept others telling you that ‘you can't or ‘you’re not good enough’. They document long term derision, mocking of a person's skin color, sexual orientation and the dismissal of others and the lasting effects this has on all of us experiencing this. They want you to know that your handicap does not make you less of a human being.
