  1. Help Me Over

    Help me.

    Help me over.

    Help me cross.

    I can see the sky

    framed

    by debris,

    by rocks,

    by wire,

    by dereliction.

    Framed

    by sharpness and

    impenetrable barriers.

I want to see it clear,

    clear and unblemished

    creamy white

    and pink and blue.

    Help me see it.

    Help me over.

    Help me cross.

I want want to see it

    framed by trees,

    I want to see

    the rocks become

    flowers

    again.

    Help me.

    Help me over.

    Help me cross

    to the place

    where the birds are singing

breaking up the sky with flight.

Does it still exist, this place?

    I must think so.

    Help me find it.

    Help me.

    Help me over.

    Help me cross

  2. The Last Soldier Sighs

    the last soldier on earth
stood alone in the last battlefield
    surveying the dead

    hearing their ghostly cries
    echoing in the wind

    the earth does not care
    goes around the sun

    the last soldier walks away
filled with sorrow as he sighs

  3. Is there any shadow darker than one cast in war’s frivolous dare? Are lives made richer from the loss that families bear? Or is the silence sufficient when we look into death’s vacant stare?

    Title: Long Shadow

    It follows the movement
    of the sun
    never allowing warming rays
    to incubate seedling starts
    never allowing light
    to show a way.

    Charred carbon vestiges
    splintered bones and dented helmets
    blood caked upon the soil

    … this long shadow
    leaves only flies to feast
    endless cycles of courting wars
    and barren retreats.
